- Iquitos, Peru
What a perfect day to end my trip. Definitely enjoyable and I want to come back again. The day started off very early - 05:30. I got up and went to the dock. We jumped on a boat and went to an island (one of many) on the Amazon River. Humidity was at 100% at this time and the temperature already in the 80s. I had a wonderful time looking at the different birds and plants. We spent a good hour walking around and saw a few monkeys, lots of parakeets and a few macaws, king fish and a whole lot of birds I can't remember. We came back for a quick breakfast. I have to say the food is good and very authentic. I've had yucca, palm leaves and of course bananas, oranges, etc. After breakfast we went for a wonderful two hour walk in the jungle. We saw all kinds of things and experienced a lot. We walked for a while and came to an opening where a family lived. They had their house on stilts and guinea pigs running all over the place. Even swung from a vine like Tarzan. Had sugarcane, drank water from a vine, ate a fruit similar to a lime.... just a great time. Our guide took us on a nice little path for most of the way. Then he turned to a wall of green and said, "Let's go this way." I looked at him, looked at the jungle and asked if he was crazy. He said he knew where we were. So he started cutting through the vegetation with his machete and we started following him. Every once and a while he'd stop, look up at the sky and vegetation and them move on. I kept asking him if he knew where he was going. Of course he did! He grew up in the jungle. It was very interesting watching him cut his way for us. And yes we did end up back at the Lodge with no problems. Its hard to write everything down as my mind is just racing. After lunch we went fishing - for piranhas! I caught a few small ones that I threw back, but finally caught a good size one. We brought them back and had them for dinner - very tasty. Got to get some sleep as have to get up at 04:45. Will continue tomorrow as I'll be in Lima for the day until my flight - late in the evening. |
